Our journey begins with an early 4:00 am departure from Cusco. After a 4-hour drive, we’ll arrive at Capuliyoc (2,900m). This scenic spot marks the start of our trek, and here we’ll join our muleteers and horses, gearing up for the adventure ahead.
The trail beckons with a 3-hour downhill hike, leading us to the picturesque Chikiska (1,900m). Here, we’ll pause to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, surrounded by the stunning vistas of the Vilcabamba range and the grand Apurimac canyon. Post-lunch, our journey continues for another hour, guiding us to our first campsite at Playa Rosalinas (1,500m). As night approaches, we’ll gather for a warm tea, followed by a hearty dinner.

The morning at Playa Rosalinas starts with an energizing breakfast. Today’s trail promises to be challenging yet rewarding. We’ll embark on a 5-hour switchback ascent, aiming for the Marampata community. As we hike, the path offers glimpses of sugar cane farms, expansive valley views, and if luck is on our side, the majestic flight of condors.
Reaching Marampata marks the end of our uphill journey for the day. Here, we’ll relish a freshly prepared lunch, all the while gazing at the distant Choquequirao Inca ruins. Due to new regulations, we’ll set up camp at Marampata for the night. The afternoon is free for relaxation, and for those interested, a hot shower is available for a small fee. As evening descends, we’ll reconvene for tea and dinner.

Day 3: Exploration of Choquequirao
Our day starts with a hearty breakfast, fueling us for the hour-long hike to the majestic Choquequirao Park. This ancient site, larger than even Machu Picchu, awaits our exploration. We’ll delve into its history, wandering through temples, terraces, palaces, and the unique llama’s area.
Choquequirao, translating to “Cradle of Gold” in the Quechua Inca language, is a marvel of ancient architecture. As we explore, we’ll learn about its significance and the ongoing archaeological discoveries being made. Midday, we’ll take a break as our cook and horseman bring us lunch within the park. Post-lunch, our exploration continues to the lower parts of Choquequirao, including the terraces of Pacchayoc. As the day winds down, we’ll return to our Marampata campsite for tea and dinner.

The hike, spanning approximately 6 hours, retraces some of our earlier steps, taking us through familiar settlements. We’ll break our journey at Playa Rosalina for lunch, before continuing on to Chiquiska. Here, amidst the serene surroundings, we’ll set up camp for the night.

A 3-hour uphill trek awaits, leading us to the conclusion of our expedition. Here, we’ll celebrate our journey with one last lunch, expressing our gratitude to the muleteers, cook, and tour guide who’ve been integral to our adventure.
The afternoon sees us boarding our private transport, embarking on the 5-hour drive back to Cusco. Along the way, we’ll make a stop at Saywite, home to the intriguing monolith of Saywite. This granite boulder, adorned with over 208 carved figures, offers insights into Incan cosmology and their reverence for water.
