Day 1: Cusco – Chinchero – Urquillos – Aguas Calientes
We begin our journey from Cusco, venturing through the picturesque Sacred Valley in a private van. Our first stop is the vibrant village of Chinchero, renowned for its rich history, archaeological wonders, and the famous handicrafts market. Here, we’ll explore the Inca ruins, including the grand palace of Emperor Tupac Yupanqui and the Main Square.
From Chinchero, we embark on the Chinchero-Urquillos hike, a gentle downhill trek spanning approximately 8 km. This trail offers a blend of ancient paths, breathtaking landscapes, and views of the sacred mountains, Sahuasiray and Pitusiray. A highlight of this trek is the Poc Poc waterfall, cascading from a height of about 50 meters, offering a refreshing natural spectacle.
Our hike concludes at the quaint village of Urquillos, nestled amidst vast farming fields. From here, we journey to the historic Inca village of Ollantaytambo. Rich in archaeology and legends, Ollantaytambo is a gateway to Machu Picchu. We board the train, with an option to upgrade to the Vistadome for panoramic views, as we transition from the Sacred Valley to the lush periphery of the Peruvian rainforest. Our day culminates in Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu, where we’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s exploration.
