Cusco – Limatambo – Chonta – Cusco.
Start your day with a departure from Cusco at 7:00 AM, embarking on an exciting journey along the Cusco-Limatambo route. This drive lasts approximately two hours, but it’s far from monotonous. You’ll make intermittent stops at intriguing archaeological sites like Kilarumiyoc and Tarawasi. Each pause provides an opportunity to stretch your legs, take photos, and delve into the rich cultural history of the region with your knowledgeable guide.
As you continue to ascend toward the quaint community of Chonta, you’ll reach an elevation of 3,400 meters above sea level. Along the way, revel in the striking beauty of key scenic spots, where you can capture the magnificence of the Salkantay snow-capped mountain and the Limatambo valley. Upon arrival in Chonta around noon, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch set against the backdrop of the Salkantay mountain range. It’s an idyllic setting that perfectly complements the day’s journey.
The afternoon is reserved for the main event: a trek to the Condor Canyon Viewpoint. This 1.5-hour hike sets the stage for the day’s crowning experience. Once at the viewpoint, you’ll have around two hours to observe the breathtaking flight of the Andean condors. These magnificent creatures often come thrillingly close, sometimes flying within a mere 20 meters of the viewpoint. It’s a spectacle of nature that few are lucky enough to witness.
After this unforgettable experience, you’ll trek back to Chonta and commence your return journey to Cusco, arriving approximately at 8:00 PM. This 1-Day Chonta Canyon Trek offers not just a chance to see the Andean condor in its natural habitat, but also a rich tapestry of cultural and natural experiences that make for an unforgettable adventure.
