The three-hour drive towards Pitumarca is an experience in itself, taking you through colorful heritage towns such as Urcus, Quiquijana, and Cusipata. Witness the dramatic landscapes unfold – valleys plunging, rivers cutting through rocky terrains, and vast lakes stretching into the horizon.
Arrival at Pitumarca and Drive to Ausangate Valley
Upon reaching the town of Pitumarca (3600m), take some time to stretch your legs and acclimate to the elevation. The journey then continues for another one and a half hours, following the footsteps of the Ausangate valley. This route is a gateway to exploring rural villages, witnessing living, breathing cultures, impressive Inca sites, and the towering majesty of the snow-capped Ausangate peak, standing proudly at 6375 meters.
Exploring the Ananiso Canyon
The first canyon viewpoint is a testament to the earth’s raw power. Here, deep and elongated cracks in the earth form a beautiful yet vulnerable terrain. As you venture into the community of Ananiso (4400m), the trek becomes an intimate encounter with the impressive Ananiso Canyon. Follow a narrow path for about one and a half hours to a hidden waterfall, a serene spot that’s a feast for the senses.

On the return journey, delve into the region’s ancient past with a visit to indigenous cave paintings, dating back thousands of years. The trek also offers chances to spot local wildlife such as llamas, alpacas, vizcachas, and eagles, guardians of these sacred lands.
Lunch and Return to Cusco
After the trek, enjoy a well-deserved lunch in the community of Ananiso, reflecting on the day’s experiences.
